Looking Towards Quantoxhead is inspired by a wonderful painting of the same name that hangs above my desk at home. Painted in 1979 by Tessa Perceval, a well-known British/Australian artist, the work portrays a sweeping panoramic view of the English coastal headland approaching Quantoxhead. What captivates me most about the painting is its dynamic nature, which unfolds through the interplay between the rugged land, the misty sea, and pristine sky. The weathered textures of the nearby cliff face and rocky beach seamlessly merge with the frigid character of the sea and distant headlands, depicting the contrasting qualities of nature. I’ve endeavoured to reflect the painting’s characteristics by drawing on appropriate instrumental colours, textures and techniques, whilst keeping true to the painting’s vivid sense of openness and vastness.
MOSAIC (Solo Piano) ca. 8 mins. Premiered at the Ehrbar Hall, Vienna. Golden Key Composition Competition 2023. 1st Prize, International Young Artist.
This piece was composed during the months leading up to my third year composition recital in the later months of 2022. As a composition student, I attended weekly one-on-one lessons with my tutor Alice Humphries, who's guidance and expertise was invaluable to Mosaic. Alice especially helped me name the piece, in the way she described her interpretation of the world the piece envelops.
